Tips for Downsizing Your Home

There are various reasons why you may want to downsize your home. Some of the most common reasons for this are to reduce living expenses, to send kids to college, fund retirement, the house is too big, and living a simpler life. If you are planning to downsize your place, here are some tips on how to do it.

Have a plan

Have a family meeting to ensure that everyone is on the same page with regard to the move. It can be a challenge to say goodbye to the home and things you’ve had for years, so everyone needs to be prepared and ready to do it. Plan on the best way to divide the tasks for the move so that everyone is involved, which will also make the job quicker and more efficient. Plus, you can also time the preparation or the move when everyone or at least the majority of the family is available to help out.

Measure the new place

Measure the rooms in your new home to ensure that the appliances and furniture that you will bring will fit. It can be frustrating traveling with all those heavy things to find out that they don’t fit in your new place. If your old items don’t fit, then you may need to leave them and buy new ones that will fit in the new home.

Avoid buying new items

You will be downsizing, so it also means that you will have less space for new things. Unless it is needed, avoid getting more new items. However, if you need it for your new home, of course, you can go ahead and make a purchase. As with the previous example, if your furniture doesn’t fit in your new home, then you need to get new items.

Segregate items

Separate items into things that you will keep and those that you will dispose of. For the things to keep, focus on those that you need. Go for the essentials only since you will be downsizing. It may be challenging to let go of things because of the memories attached to them, but master the courage to do so to ensure that your new place will be comfortable and not too cramped.

Donate or sell things

For the things that you will dispose of, you can donate them to family and friends who might want them. You may also leave them in a box outside your home and put a sign that they are for free, so anyone who might want them can take them. If you want to earn extra money, you can also start a yard sale and sell your things for a low price.

Start now

You don’t have to wait for the day of the move itself to start segregating things and cleaning up. Start now and do things little by little, so when the move comes, there will only be small tasks waiting for you to do.

For things that you were not able to sell or donate, you need to dispose of them correctly. A company specializing in junk removal services can help you with the job. They will pick up the trash that requires disposal and take it from there.
